This
past fall with seven TCC Interns, we saw the numbers of students swell to over
25. A life skills class for mothers met
in the apartment complex across the street and their children ages 3-12 years
would attend the weekly sessions. A
large number of older elementary boys also attended and group activities were
organized for their growth in the area of leadership and communication. Organized sports activities are necessary for
boys of this age and the two young male interns served as coaches for these
boys. Our focus character trait was Respect. We see that these children are looking for a
place to connect with adults and organized activities. We found
that active sports before quieter group activities did help to curb some of the
behavior issues.
The purpose of the Kids University (KU) is to help children in our community learn the aspects of good nutrition, strengthen academic skills, and to foster teamwork as they work together developing a student garden.
